Nationally known swimming icon Michael Phelps was photographed taking a hit out of a marijuana pipe. The photograph was published on super bowl Sunday in a British newspaper. Phelps, who planned to attend the super bowl in Tampa quickly decided not to attend the game.
Phelps acknowledged the photo and did nothing to try to fight the legitimacy of it. This just goes to show you that no one is perfect. Whether Phelps made a one-time mistake or is an avid user, his name will now be tarnished forever. As a national icon this will haunt Phelps forever. It will constantly be hung over his head. As a role model to millions of children throughout the world Phelps needs to step back, look himself in the mirror, and decide for himself what he is thinking.
Just three years after his 2006 guilty plea to drunken driving charges what is Phelps thinking? Is he still just an immature 23-year-old boy? All signs point to yes. Can he turn his image around? As it looks now, no he cannot.
